Aztec Dancers in Querétaro, Mexico

Aztec Dancers

High energy in constant movement. Dancing, jumping, twirling to the constant thump of drums, some plucking guitars. A performance that continues traditions dating back hundreds, thousands of years. Sustaining the music, dances, culture of ancient inhabitants of Mexico.

These are members of a Danza Azteca group, who dedicate time to learn and practice traditional dances, and perform at ceremonies and other events. They range in age from young children to seniors, and all show the physical stamina required by the long, active dances.

Some carry banners with religious figures and messages, showing the blend of indigenous and European cultures that now define Mexico. Many wear the plumage of traditional Aztec feather headdresses, and all have their own unique costume and symbols as homage to the ancients.

I came across this group performing in a Queretaro plaza in October 2018 and was very impressed with their performance, appearance, skill, energy, stamina and dedication to continuing the traditions of Aztec dance.
